When I first started collecting nihonto, I made the classic blunder of buying before reading. As a result I ended up with a great deal of junk, which was incredibly disheartening. So I began to read, and study. The superb Japanese tomes that are translated into English were incredibly informative, but lacked a certain simplicity needed for the rank amateur to understand what your were looking at. Mr. Brockbank and Mr. Benson have collated a stunning easy to understand but subtly sophisticated collection, perfect for the layman or the scholar. Between books of this caliber and the excellent education I received from Mr. Brockbank, my knowledge and appreciation of Nihonto has expanded remarkably. I think in another 20 years or so, I may actually have the skill necessary to know what I'm looking at! Thank you both for the efforts made on behalf of the novice.

Japanese Swords of the Bizen Tradition Excellent photography and text. Utsuri is visible in some of the photos, and the boshi in nearly all. Each sword has its own oshigata which do wonders to help the reader to discern the more subtle activity in the hamon. The English text is all that you would expect from a man of Robert Benson's qualifications: detailed, eloquent and to the point. I would like to mention that the paper is of excellent quality and the spiral binding is very convenient. All in all I prefer the photography to the Compton/Christie's books, the text is much more informative, and the oshigata add immeasurably. Roger Vuilleumier
