REQUIRED READING: How to Get Your Life for Good
Paperback, 210 Pages

Darryl Stephens is probably best known for his portrayals of other people, like Noah–the hopeless romantic on "Noah's Arc," or Lenny–the jaded pragmatist on "DTLA." You've also seen him on "Private Practice," "2 Broke Girls," and on the big screen in "Boy Culture" and "Beyond the Lights." Here, he steps out from behind the scripted characters to open up like never before about his experience as a black gay man in Hollywood. He shares personal stories about being closeted on set, dating in the age of hookup apps, visiting a black church, and feeling daunted by the notion of being a role model. He’s straightforward and unapologetic in his pursuit of authenticity and encourages the reader to be as well. But mostly, he just wants you to get your life.

Feb 16, 2016I thank Mr. Stephens for writing "Required Reading" and sharing it with the world. It is amazing how similar his journey has been with those of ever gay men, regardless of race, and it is evident in his honest, reflective prose. He is a talented, authentic, articulate author, and though I dislike praising in cliches, I truthfully could not put down the book. I marveled at the clarity he brings to his tales, his assessments and his lessons. The anecdotes he relates and the guidance he offers are interesting and erudite. Gay men of all ages and races need to read it, and so do straight people. Many of the things he has studied and concluded about himself have helped me understand myself. Our views on so many things -- coming out, religion, dating, tolerance, promiscuity, family, monogamy are the shared and remarkably in common. Perhaps most eloquent and touching is the case that he makes about every person being deserving of love. It is reassuring that his warm soul walks among... More > us, one who has remarkable empathy, passion and generosity. It takes fortitude to reveal so much about oneself, and he does it with such grace and confidence. Stephens also expresses it with genuine emotion, humor and authority. That is a gift. He doesn't preach, doesn't apologize, he shares. As white, middle-aged man, he helped me understand a bit more about the black experience, yet drove home many of the similar situations and life moments that once-closeted, often-insecure gay men share. When a reader finds that his thoughts, fears, practices have been shared by others, it allows one to feel lesson alone. His book is therapeutic in that way.< Less
Sep 10, 2015I only knew Darryl Stephens from his star making role as Noah on the tv series 'Noah's Arc' and I assumed that Noah = Darryl. Which wouldn't have necessarily been a bad thing. But oh Mr Stephens is so much more than that. He speaks authentically to my experience as a gay man, a black man, and a hu-man. There's nothing more important we can share than our stories and Darryl Stephens openly and lovingly shares his with us, without self-pity, and what reads to me like complete honesty. From a blessed and difficult childhood, thru the traumas of coming out, dating, love and career, I was with him every step of the way. I argued and agreed and argued and agreed with him about god. I admired his belief in himself and in his desiring and pursuit of true love. There's a beautifully written chapter about a film shoot for a movie that was never released, but I was perhaps most moved by a brief chapter later in the book where Stephens talks about taking a catering gig well into his career. It... More > was just so poignantly honest. Darryl Stephens writes about the black gay experience that in a way reminds me of the poet Essex Hemphill. It is poetry. It gets underneath my skin in a way I can't fully understand or explain. He articulates the beauty and pain and triumph; he lets me understand what growing up can do to crush your psyche and what the world can do to make you feel less than; it makes me quite emotional really. My own story is different and the same. It's taken me a lifetime to finally overcome the self-loathing I didn't even know I had. 'Required Reading' is another beautiful step in my own personal journey to become whole. Thank you sweet Darryl for letting me get to know you. 5++++ stars.< Less
