Dave Burgess and Keith Kakugawa have skillfully collaborated to produce A Tale of Two Brothers, the story “Kaku” and “Barry” - Kaku who is Keith, and Barry, as in Barack. Not many have heard of Keith, but everybody on the planet knows the name Barack Obama. In the book, Keith through Dave “talks story” in an honest, down to earth manner about family (ohana), school, sports, and business, including what life was like for a person of mixed race in 1970’s multi-cultural Hawaii. The book is thoroughly engaging, and I felt it transport me back to my own coming of age experience in Honolulu and at Punahou School, where I attended from 1969-75. In particular, the description of the cultural nuances of Punahou was dead on. I didn’t know Barack since he’s four years younger than I am, but I do remember Keith from my time on the Punahou track team. I think this book accomplishes several things: (1) Helps those unfamiliar with Hawaii grasp the unique culture that is Hawaii, the culture in which... More > Barack Obama was born and raised in and its probable impact on him today; (2) Sets the record straight about Keith’s relationship with Barry from Keith’s vantage point; (3) But most importantly, it reveals Keith’s personal life, the highs and lows, and his ongoing personal quest for self-understanding, something that we’re all working on. I wonder, wouldn’t it be great if Oprah were to find this book and invite Kaku, Barry, and Dave on her show before she goes off the air? You never know.< Less
