How to survive on boiled eggs, rollies, brown ale, punk and reggae in front of a malfunctioning two bar heater. Tracing the author's route from the Yorkshire Dales to study English at Newcastle University, The Shed Chronicles charts his arrival in the Geordie, Asian and student ghetto of the town's West End at the beginning of Margaret Thatcher's term as Prime Minister, portraying the doleboys and students who had found themselves drawn there and chronicling (yes!) the scams, bands and football teams they created to ease the boredom and poverty of those years. More than a mere exercise in Shedstalgia, however, The Shed Chronicles weaves a compelling narrative of glorious fun eked out in a city losing the battle for survival, drawing parallels with Britain now and even name-checking Tristram Shandy, Errol Garner, George the harmonica busker and, of course The (mighty) Shed - how many books on your shelf do that? I admit to being a minor character in The Shed Chronicles and therefore... More > clearly remember just how special it was to be in a particular Fenham, Newcastle at a particular time with such a warm, lively and dynamic bunch of people. When The Establishment were quite clearly traitors to any Britain I cared about, when cunning began to be valued higher than intellect & money higher than justice (sound familiar?) and when we who fought all that knew who we were and knew we were right. Those of you for whom the eighties in Britain weren't one long coked-up synthi party - get this book. If you lived in the West End of Newcastle from '80 to '85 you're probably in it...!< Less
