I would echo the review here by Simcha Jones, who says this book can stand alone even without its associated game, The Hateful Place; it's an enjoyable read on its own. The emphasis here is on the Dark and the Horrible, and I think it would grace the bookshelf of anyone who is interested in weird or dark fantastic tales. This "Book B" continues and expands upon the "generators" of the first book, adding various new options that enhance, rather than replace, previous options. I use this book primarily as a source of inspiration for other games; it fits anything from traditional fantasy to dystopian sci-fi to weird post-apocalypse settings and literally everything in between. Our group has used the generators here to create stories in settings ranging from pre-white-contact Native America to Shadowrun-style cyberpunk to political machinations in Tudor England, and it's been our ace-in-the-hole each time. Game systems come and go and change like the tide - The Hateful... More > Place Book B will transcend all that and leave you plenty of dark gaming fodder for years. I'm quite certain I could never buy another game book and get a decade's worth of inspiring ideas with this book alone. It's definitely worth adding to your bookshelf. And while it's neither here nor there in terms of content, I'm impressed with the non-traditional, slightly obscure and vaguely unsettling cover art. That's always a nice plus.< Less

If you really really enjoy thinking about strange and horrible things, you need this book. You don't necessarily need its predecessor (http://www.lulu.com/shop/dave-mitchell/the-hateful-place/paperback/product-23011247.html), but I would highly recommend that you get them both. The power of its excellent weirdness requires no context. You can use it as a rpg gaming supplement for any game, I would say, from Fiasco to OSR. But it doesn't need any game at all--it's enjoyable on its own, like an evil puzzle object from a great genre movie. About half the booklet (22 pgs.) is made up of 'generators.' I would add an adjective and label them 'inspiration generators' or 'creativity jump-starters.' You can pick one at random and it will inspire you to write a poem, story, drawing or game of your own.
