Oct 3, 2017You might think to yourself - why would I learn a new system for tabletop roleplaying games? There are so many. I'm even pretty good at making my own games. At least, that's what I thought. I picked up tHp and I'm glad I did. Learning the game system? No problem. It's simple enough for beginners and veterans will enjoy filling in the blanks. Where tHp comes alive for me is as a source of inspiration. As both a player and GM my favorite resource is The Table of Random stuff, and this book delivers in spades. Even when I'm playing other games, such as the Black Hack or Lamentations of the Flame Princess, I use this book as a treasure trove of ideas. Just a quick glance at the tables in this book immediately suggest adventures no matter what system or genre I'm running. It works best for "dark" games but I've used this book in conjunction with games you might not think to use it with, such as Classic Traveller, and it always delivers. That being said, the system provided here... More > is sleek and simple, and even the most ardent rules-lawyer will find it difficult to poke holes in. I've praised this game elsewhere in other reviews and I'll continue to do so. Of all the latest crop of "weird fantasy" material dominating the so-called "old-school renaissance" in gaming, The Hateful Place is very close to the top of that list. I highly recommend it to any thoughtful, intelligent gamer.< Less
Mar 12, 2017Dave Mitchell has developed a great game in The Hateful Place (tHp). The game mechanics hearken back to the first role-playing games because they are carefully-conceived and ultra-streamlined. The rules of tHp are easy to master, so everyone can focus on playing the game. Befitting the game setting and often defying expectations, the game rules are weird. But the logic of the rules system is also explained. Dave Mitchell's writing is excellent and beautifully (or hideously?) draws the setting, mood and tone of The Hateful Place. As designed, tHp is suited for shorter session play, not 'campaign' play, because there is no traditional character development built in. Besides, the intensity of the game world will probably be better sustained during shorter sessions (also, the characters will likely be short-lived). tHp is also an excellent addition to your library to read to inspire your other dark role-playing games (Dying Earth, Cthulhu, post-apocalyptic, horror, and Lamentations Of The... More > Flame Princess).< Less
