The Society of Antiquaries of London founded in 1707 and the Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce founded in 1754 owed their existence to the zest for accumulation of knowledge which was a characteristic of Enlightenment culture. Dr Allan traces the history of the two societies during the two and a half centuries of their joint existence. This is a vivid account of international politicking and creative cooperation in the nineteenth century. The career of Henry Benjamin Wheatley LLD, FSA, (1838-1917) Editor of the Society of Arts Journal, Council Member of the Antiquaries, ‘Pepysian’, friend of William Morris, and pioneer of Indexing has a special interest. The little known story of the Maltwood Bequest for archaeological research in Somerset which concerned both societies in the later twentieth century is told.
