Vedānta-sūtra is the ultimate knowledge of the Vedas. Vedic knowledge is very elevated, having issued forth from Mahā-Viṣṇu, the Supreme Godhead, at the time of creation. The Vedānta-sūtras are extremely recondite and esoteric, and are thus accessible to ordinary human intelligence only in the context of a commentary. The first Adhikaraṇa or topic of Vedānta begins the inquiry into the Absolute or Brahman. Everyone should inquire very seriously about the Absolute, because knowledge of the Absolute—the science of consciousness—is the only source of unconditional happiness. There is no other means to obtain perfect, uninterrupted, endless happiness, because consciousness is the fundamental existential issue. Such exalted happiness is possible only through understanding and practicing the recondite truths of Vedānta in regard to one’s personal relationship with the Absolute.

"Śrī Vedānta-sūtra, Adhyāya 1" "Everyone should inquire very seriously about the Absolute. Why? Because knowledge of the Absolute, the science of consciousness and spiritual life- is the only source of unconditional happiness." Page 37 This sums it up. Anyone who wishes to know about the Absolute, and their constitutional position within it, should read this book. It's a large print paperback book, with a beautiful cover, and also, the first legitimate commentary on Śrī Vedānta-sūtra, Adhyāya 1 ever released in English. David Bruce Hughes truly understands the nature of the Absolute according to Vedic scriptures.
"Great Book - must read" When I first started reading this book, I just couldn't put it down. Vedanta sutras contain the highest form of Vedic knowledge in a very short concise form. This book provides a detailed explanation of sutras in easy to understand language. The extended commentary brings the work into relevance for contemporary issues. A lot of supporting quotations are provided from a variety of Vedic literature to expand upon and prove the point. I was actually able to follow the reasoning and have many 'Oh! That's why it is so!' moments. This book and the Adhyaya 2 were my first purchase from Lulu. Naturally I was a little unsure about on-demand printing. Let me just say that from the beginning to end it was a wonderful experience. It is a large book, with a most beautiful cover. Inside the paper and print quality is excellent. The font size and the ink darkness is good. I was very happy with the way Lulu.com handled the ordered. I particularly liked the PayPal... More > payment option and MediaMail shipping option. The books were first packed in a thin foam jacket and then in a custom fit cardboard wrap-around. Very nice. In my particular case, it took them only 5 business days to get the book to my hand by media mail, can't beat that. I have just ordered the last book in the set, Adhyayas 3&4 and I can't wait to get it in my hand!< Less
