This is an important work. Not only does the author provide a crucial structural perspective to a dance form associated with passion and improvisation, he elevates the form into definitive art. Or, as the book's Chapter 1 epigram from Voltaire suggests, “Dancing is an art because it has rules.” This is also a beautifully crafted work. In stark contrast to what some might mistakenly assume to be a dry subject, the book itself possesses musicality. Its clear and encouraging prose, beautifully composed photographs, subtly ornate design – and, yes, even its geometric illustrations and technical tables – are as gracefully and creatively integrated as the dance should be. And like good tango, CHANGING DIRECTIONS is rich with layer upon layer of nuance and soul-deep understanding. This is an important work and a unique achievement. Dedicated students, teachers, performers, and admirers of tango – as well as practitioners of any serious dance form – have everything to gain by reading it.
