The life of leading Parliamentarian Sir Henry Vane the Younger , beheaded in 1662 , is much overlooked , Herny Vane was active within Parliament, within Naval administration, diplomacy, wrote books on theology and politics. He was also governor of Massachusets in 1636-7. Yet the contribution Sir Heny Vane the Younger played during the British Civil Wars and Commonwealth was crucial, ableit away from the battlefields. This Lulu .com print on demand book from 2011- is the first biography of Sir Henry Vane since 1970 -and most welcome. The writer is clearly a supporter of Sir Henry Vane. In fact the ‘Too Dangerous to Live’ quote is from a letter that the newly restored Charles II wrote to Lord Clarendon in 1662, in a drive to ensure that Vane was convicted of treason. The strength of the book is that the writer eloquently gives account of all the key roles that Sir Henry Vane played in the ‘Good Old Cause’ . A superb introduction to the man’s life. It’s fair to state this into a... More > scholarly work. Sometimes the lack of foot notes and citing of references gets disappointing for those researching Vane’s life in more details. For example, how hostile was Vane towards The Levellers ? Did he back Cromwell’s 1649 Ireland campagin in principle? And some of the major happenings of the time such as the Second Civil War of 1648-49 barely gets one paragraph. But am giving it five stars nevertheless.< Less
