After a page-length extract (a kind of epigram) of “Fungi from Yuggoth”, the book begins, as is Haden’s wont, with a short story (a pastiche sequel to “Mountains”). The next few essays survey the delayed publication, the precursors, would-be sequels, & events contemporaneous to the writing of the novella. Some attention is paid to attempts various authors have made to connect “Mountains” with Poe’s “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym”. Also noted are the influence of Admiral Byrd’s 1928-30 expedition to Antartica, & the great literary & photographic records of it that came out over the next few years. Leaving no stone unturned, he even has a short collection of accounts of the physical & mental deterioration of many real-life polar expeditions—madness of a more mundane, but persistent nature than found in Lovecraft’s work. These essays are often generously illustrated throughout. I get the impression that Haden had written these essays separately over a period of some... More > time, & only later compiled them into a single volume with little editing. For instance, he repeats himself on some matters, such as the initial rejection of Mountains for publication (pp. 18 & 61), which surely would have been avoided had he been intending to put out a whole book to begin with. Aside from a couple typos, there's little to mar the reading of this book. Haden’s prose is often clear, & he is careful to mark where he speculates rather than reports fact, though at times this can give him a bit of a wishy-washy voice.< Less
