Over the last half a million years, Earth's climate has been swinging up and down between nine degrees colder than today and three degrees warmer. During that time, the warmer times have always been better for life on Earth, and the colder times have always been worse. In the cold times, ice swallowed up the northern world, and reduced rainfall meant that dry deserts like the Sahara got much bigger while the rainforests died back. At the warmest times, the ice retreated and more rain meant that the Sahara turned from desert into grassland dotted with lakes. Warmer times always meant more trees, and colder times always meant more desert. The obvious conclusion - a world warmer than today would be better for life. This book sets out, without using any difficult scientific language, the basic principles of how global temperature changes the world, and the evidence for how things were during the warm and cold periods of the past.
