This is the debut book from author David Howsam. With this book David Howsam explores through the use of symbol and myth the way we construct signs to imagine the world. It is concerned with making visible the mythic and visionary possibilities of language through a series of philosophic and visionary prose pieces. David Howsam has brought together a set of influences that range through experimental fiction to music and painting. He cites his major influences as William Burroughs, Jorge Luis Borges, Jean Genet, Albert Camus, Rimbuad, Cormac McCarthy, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and the painters Paul Klee and Jackson Pollock. Music by Bill Laswell and Brian Eno also play a part in the formation of the images used in this book. David Howsam hopes this Small Collection of Signs implies a larger canvas than may be immediately obvious. 'One day, he thinks, this world will fall and all that will be left, all that will remain is this small collection of signs he has placed upon the earth.'
