David Hawkin has written an engaging novel that will find a well deserved home in the bookshelves of a wide variety of readers. Veterans of the blood spilling processes that characterize university decision-making will feel immediately at home. The centrepiece of the book is a promotion review of an exemplary faculty member by a cast of deeply flawed colleagues who support/oppose the candidate for a variety of entertainingly self-interested reasons. Dancing in the background is an assertive graduate student, supervised by the woeful application for promotion, who stuns the university with a provocative presentation that denounces the cherished values of its key actors. The action plays out in a university that has lost its sense of mission to corporatism. Readers who have never worked in a university will recognize similar themes in their own workplaces, although universities are probably more extreme than most in their celebration of the appearance of rationality over its practice.... More > Subplots abound, including an extended correspondence with a dysfunctional friend applying for a position with the British secret service and a sex toy that attracts the attention of protagonists and readers alike. This is a genuinely funny book and at 150 or so pages it is a quick read. The ending brings the main and subplots together in a pleasing conclusion that holds promise of future developments involving the same merry collection of reprobates. Hawkin is a thoughtful writer who touches on serious themes with a light hand. I look forward to more from this unique voice. John A.
