This story celebrates the birth of the United States Rectangular Survey System. The Indiana Territory was the gateway to the newly acquired vast expanse of the Louisiana Purchase and was the millennia old Buffalo Trace; running from the Rocky Mountains through Indiana; down through the Silver Hills, across the natural stone bridge across the Falls of the Ohio. The north/south-east/west compass survey lines and the maps made by adventuring surveyors allowed the money starved new nation to create a market in land such as the world had never known. Ancient legends along the Buffalo Trace spoke of silver being buried by a fleeing tribe somewhere along the Knobs area of the Trace. 1805 saw the arrival of Surveyors whose mission to map the trace east from Vincennes was intertwined with the Legend of the Indian Silver. The surveyors soon learn from Keeko Scott, a Scottish, Blackfoot guide that the Silver is cursed and peril awaits those who seek it.
