A compelling mix of reality and fantasy, the action of ANOTHER SATURDAY TO KILL takes place in a graduate school complex, in local bars, an "art" theatre, and a hillside shrine of the Virgin Mary overlooking the decaying mills of Pittsburgh's South Side. The novel covers the intricacies and disintegration in the history and the current state of the mind of Adrian O'Bannion, a graduate student in English Literature, as he struggles to find release on a Saturday on which he has cut all classes because of the competitive stress he constantly finds himself under. Late in the day, when the mix finally overwhelms him, he compulsively kills a female undergraduate of one of the classes he teaches. And there is the clear and proveable inference in the EPILOGUE -- TWO WEEKS LATER of ANOTHER SATURDAY TO KILL that this is not the first time such an unhappy event in the life of the hero has taken place. ANOTHER SATURDAY TO KILL takes a serious look into the mind of a serial killer.

"ANOTHER SATURDAY TO KILL" “You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style” wrote Nabokov’s Humbert Humbert on the first page of Lolita. David Kaufman’s Adrian O’Bannion is one of those qualified demented stylists, no question. Every event in Another Saturday to Kill is filtered through the active—and often fantasizing—mind of this failing middle-aged English literature PhD candidate. It’s all about the writing as Adrian moves through the Saturday of the title. His rooming house, the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning and its classrooms, a hillside shrine to the Virgin, a porno movie, various bars, and a number of women are portrayed in showers of highly original and often comic phrases. Allusions to the Great Works also abound—be quick, reader! There’s another one darting in on the next line or paragraph. Brush up your Shakespeare and Fitzgerald and prepare to be entertained. Literature not to your taste? Don’t worry. Adrian has plenty of... More > politically incorrect views on sex, race, education, religion, marriage—his failed one and those of others. Vignettes of Pittsburgh life and the Oakland area with its tucked away charming corners provide an authentic background to his tormented wanderings and a change of direction for his lunatic commentary. But Another Saturday to Kill isn’t just a mind trip. There’s a solid story line involving the comely Debbie of the Wide Bra whose innocence provokes Adrian to cross the line between his harmless, impish fantasies and real life’s morbid dangers. The reader is swept up totally in the final confrontation between Adrian’s merciless passion and Debbie’s authentic chastity. In the end there remain significant and intentional unanswered questions that suggest that the reader doesn’t know Adrian nearly as well as he thought. Another Saturday to Kill is a great read for those tired of police procedurals, detectives with cats, and other homicidal commonplaces. A trip into Adrian’s head provides unique refreshment, but don’t overstay your welcome! — Dimitri Gat NOTE ON THE AUTHOR—Mr. Kaufman is also the author of the LULU publication: BEOWULF, A Current English Version.
