Designing For Cost and Time Savings In Modular Construction Projects
D. Kesting
Save money. Save time. These two statements are the draw of modular construction when prefabrication is discussed. Interest in modular construction increases as construction costs rise along with the demand for housing. Along with a decrease in the quality of on-site construction
These two benefits however, saving time and money, are often almost as elusive to modular building as good design. As architects, can we strive for design excellence as while achieving the cost benefits of modular construction? As a tool, does modular construction give us design opportunities to build faster and more affordably?
In short, if you strive for it, you can find cost savings and design excellence. A review of the building systems for stacked modular projects and a review of four existing stacked structures will detail some of the benefits and pitfalls of prefabrication.
