Clyde Colson has developed a raging drug problem, and Dags Bissell, his old friend, thinks he can cure him by reaching out to Clyde’s family for help. The two men are estranged, but briefly connect when Clyde calls Dags, accuses him of ruining his life, and proves it by putting a bullet through his drug-addled brain. This fast-paced novel, inspired by true life events, combines a thriller story with a personal exploration Dags can no longer avoid. Along the way he reunites with a long forgotten lover, Sterling Rodgers, who brings the closely held secret to Clyde’s funeral service that takes them both on a journey that explores the complexities of relationships and the philosophy of suicide, often in a humorous way. Although Clyde’s suicide is extreme, the book touches all of us within our innate nature of relationships, with dear friends, with romance, and with family.

A fast-paced read that is extraordinarily well written. The Dragon's Fire captivates and surprises through the writer’s uncanny grasp of balance between this eye-opening story and the exploration of his own relationships and unavoidable personal evolution. The clever unfolding of experiences crafts a solid story that is apparently based on true life facts. Isn’t it said that personal experience creates the best writing? This book does not disappoint. I tried to savor the book longer by limiting myself to a chapter a night but it was too compelling to put down. The Dragon’s Fire provided that distinctive juxtaposition between flat-out thriller stuff and the gentle, considered relationship elements that result in a book I will read more than once. It is my sincere hope that David Laird’s next book hits the shelves quickly. One was not enough!
