I guess I've been spoiled by the late Jerry Schad's hiking guides. In comparison this guide has the feel of being the author's personal notebook. There's no maps of any of the hikes so it's hard to get a feel for the terrain. There's also a paucity of photographs. It's a scrapbook, a journal of hikes, not a hiking guide. Save your money.

This is an excellent guide! It's not just a bunch of hikes thrown together, these are hikes that this guy actually went on personally. It's very useful to know the total distance, elevation gain, overall difficulty and other important details about each hike. But, what I find most useful is the personal approach in describing each hike... it's as if he's my virtual hiking tour guide suggesting options to check out along the way and what to do if I want more, or less, from a given hike. I highly recommend this guide. It's written by THE hiking guru.

Super informative information for hikes in LA! No more guess work required in regards to difficulty, distance, mountain and in some cases, whether or not dogs are allowed on the trail! thanks for this well written, concise, accurate information. Hike on, brothers and sisters!
