When we talk about 'vulnerable groups' in our society we never mention teachers, who are often at the mercy of those they teach. Smoke Without Fire is a salutory tale of a teacher persecuted for trying to maintain discipline in what must be one of Britain's toughest comprehensive schools.

This book was a real page-turner. Dave was trying to teach in a difficult UK comprehensive when he became the victim of a campaign by his head teacher to remove him. Many would have given up when faced with the might of a huge bureaucracy but not this guy. He has a grim sense of humour and has survived the Gulf War and living on a notorious housing estate in Preston. He took on the school and the LEA and eventually got the justice he deserved. If you are a teacher, read this book, becuase it could happen to you. If you believe in justice read this book because it is not an isolated occurrence. If you are a parent of a school-age child read it because this is how some schools operate.
