Yarnia? Seriously? If you've heard of an author called C.S.Lewis and you decided to call your world "Yarnia" that's embarassing enough - if you haven't heard of C.S.Lewis and you're writing fantasy that's another level of embarassing. But Yarnia...? That's like calling your fantasy world "Liddle Earth" and being surprised when people think you have NO creative capital at all. -10 points for the most unimaginative world name in fantasy.

The gamebook renaissance continues with a new epic fantasy series. In reality, the game system in Malice worked like a dream. To start off, you assign points to 6 characteristics – Deft & Dexterity, Force & Form, Mind & Memory, Sense & Sympathy, Luck & Lottery and Energy & Endurance. These can be altered in several ways – weapons or armour may increase a particular characteristic. Or talismans or magic ( more later ) may also increase one of the 6 characteristics. Combat is ingenious, and is handled in quite a unique way. The core idea of both yourself and the enemy rolling 2 dice, is very straight forward. There are also many topics, or key words to be found with an assigned number. At an appropriate point, you can add the topic number to a paragraph and use the previous knowledge you have gained. The rest of the instructions are actually background to the world of Yarnia. While not essential, it really helps to make the adventure even more immersive. This is... More > billed as a trilogy. One of its many strengths is that it really feels like a trilogy. By that I mean that this book does not try to be complete in itself . It is very much the first third of the story. This gives it the space to slowly build up the background of the world that you found yourself. At 650 paragraphs it is large. But it’s probably as large as many gamebooks with twice as many paragraphs, as many paragraphs are long and detailed ( and in small print ). It is not afraid to combine exciting encounters with periods of detailed exploration and tantalizing details of the rich history of the world. Because of this, it succeeds more than any other gamebook I’ve played to feel that you are in a living fantasy book, which you have a large say in. Both play throughs involved very different encounters, and a different perspective of the wider While there is combat ( and very entertaining it is too ) it is not the real emphasis – searching, trying to avoid dangers, and finding out more about this rich world is it’s main emphasis. As long as you have the patience, you will be rewarded with an amazing start to what looks likely to be an awesome trilogy, with finely balanced game mechanics to match – don’t miss the opportunity!< Less
