"The Space Sieve" I enjoyed this story. Smith did a good job with the characters and the story line. It kept me interested, and I liked to pick it up after a long day of work (that is a major compliment.) It's well thought through, good storyline, great characters, and a nice moral plot in a very frightening world.

"The Space Sieve" Reading “The Space Sieve” opened new worlds to me, not only in the outward sense of space travel but also in allowing me to journey into the psyche of those of us known as sentient beings. Smith's skillful mastery of language is evident from the beginning with the use of a narrator as a main character, a technique most accomplished storytellers won’t attempt. Case in point: Listening to someone narrate the plot of a movie he’s just seen is usually an exercise in boredom because the actions and emotion are missing. However, this irascible Narrator immediately issues a challenge and then endears us to him as he dares to be all that we aren't, mostly forthright. This tussle of minds with The Narrator proves a delight and whether ones agrees or disagrees with his wry observations is of no consequence. Of course, considering him of a higher intelligence, it made me feel wiser to generally be in agreement. Considering the supposedly only 33 plot lines in our... More > existence, every happening has been recounted here. The reason these stories are told again is that everyone’s reactions to these situations differ. Smith has clearly woven his own mores and experience into the telling, giving us characters we can relate to and showing us options and consequences of both foolishness and heroism. The adventures of the young people in the book prove to be – by turn – exciting, frightening, moving and hopeful. They also include bonuses many excellent stories lack, a touch of humor, the imparting of knowledge and the perspective of fresh insights. All that being said I’m grateful for the wonderful opportunity to read this book. It needs to be seen by the world and I look forward to the sequel.< Less
