The format and contents of this book are quite simple. There are three parts. Parts I and II consist of letters to the editor by the compiler--published letters in Part I and selected unpublished ones in Part II. The third part is an appendix that consists of an address the author and compiler presented to the Hemlock Society of San Diego on March 8, 2009. The book's contents will likely be controversial, since the writer lives in perhaps the Reddest of the Red states and his views in most instances are among the Bluest of the Blue--two main exceptions being the author's stand on illegal immigration and his approval of capital punishment for murderers. As for the appendix, it offers a strong argument in favor of "pulling the plug on Grandma," if she wants it pulled. In short, this book is sure to gladden the hearts of some and raise tempers to fever pitch in others.

David T. Morgan’s A Blue Voice Crying in the Wilderness of a Red State is a window into the controversial issues facing Alabama and the nation over the sixteen years covered by the book (April 12, 1993 to August 2, 2009). During that time, Dr. Morgan, an accomplished American historian and retired history professor, wrote eighty-one letters to the editor of The Birmingham News that were published in that newspaper and another seventy-three that were submitted but not published. All 154 letters are included in A Blue Voice, with each letter introduced by the author’s remarks on the context. A Blue Voice is an issue-centered book. The primary Alabama issues are politics, religion, and education. On the national level, the primary topics are foreign policy and a variety of controversial matters that the country was grappling with during the presidencies of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Morgan has a great respect for evidence and the historical record. A succinct writer,... More > he works well within the space limitations of the letter to the editor. The book could be illuminating for Republicans who want to understand the assumptions that underlie positions of Democrats on issues addressed by Morgan, from why the racist 1901 Alabama constitution should be rewritten to why global warming is a reality that must be taken seriously. It could also be a wake-up call for Alabama voters who, according to Morgan, repeatedly vote against their own economic self-interest. Likewise, the book could be encouraging to Democrats who would appreciate having their Blue voices amplified by Morgan’s informed and candid epistolary voice. As a Democrat, Morgan shakes his head at the cavalier way that some Republicans dismiss historical evidence and make assertions that Morgan calls prevarications—or worse. The “crying” in the title is the cry of a Jeremiah outraged at the wrongs he sees around him and the web of lies that are woven to perpetuate the wrongs done to the many for the benefit of the few. Included in the appendix of A Blue Voice is Morgan’s March 8, 2009 address to the Hemlock Society of San Diego, “Thwarting the Religious Right in Matters of Life and Death.” The title of the address is an apt description of Morgan’s goal in many of his letters to the editor and in several of his books, including the futuristic novel The Righteous and the Mighty, which dramatizes issues surrounding a right-to-die law passed in the U. S. in the year 2022. A Blue Voice chronicles and laments the increasing polarization of political discourse during the past decade and a half. If read thoughtfully by enough people, the book could be a catalyst to a more reasoned, evidence-based dialogue about crucial issues facing Alabama and the nation.< Less
