Columnist Donny Love, after twenty years of chasing dreams, returns to his gritty hometown of Hamilton, Ontario with his wife Cathy, whose patience is wearing thin. They're expecting their first child and the pressure's on. He takes a job writing an entertainment column for the Hamilton Gazette, the steel town's daily paper. In the midst of a mid-life crisis, he writes a series of columns inventing a heroic and fantastic past for a long-lost friend named Steven McCartney. The columns take on a life of their own, as the public goes crazy for this mythical figure. Soon, Donny's exaggerated claims begin to haunt him in unexpected and humorous ways, as the column spreads like wildfire across North America. Even Hollywood latches onto the story, with ridiculous results.

If you ever wondered what happened to your old friends from childhood or were ever afraid to confront them at a high school reunion, then take a journey with David Walker's "Making Steven Famous." He will do all the work for you with this hilarious romp of a novel about a man who finally goes home, confronts his past and along the way grows up (sort of). After years away, Donny Love moves back to his hometown, gets a job as a local reporter and finally, to the hesitant relief of his family and better half, starts to settles down. But that itch to keep looking at distant pastures, past and future, does not seem to go away. Consciously or unconsciously Donny concocts a crazy news story about his old friend Steven. This results in a somewhat disastorous, albeit a comical creation of a myth out of someone whom he has not seen in years. As a matter of fact no one seems to know Steven's whereabouts, not even Donny. What does happen is the resurrection of Donny's past in the likes... More > of the rest of his old pals: Tony, Norbie, John. You know who they are or at least the type of guys who are floating around in your own past. Whether Donny likes it or not, he has to confront these old pals and the rest of his life with an odd assortment of characters who are a reminder that it is time for him to grow up. The book is a real page turner with laugh out loud moments and face palms to the forehead wondering why is Donny digging his grave deeper and deeper. We could look into this novel the way we would in an English class and psychoanalyze the author and wonder how much is fiction and how much is really a biographical catharsis. But for a great read over the summer pick up a copy and enjoy a trip down memory lane without having to put yourself through the trauma of having to confront your old pals. A great first novel by David Walker. I hope to read more in the future.< Less

You know, most of the time these self-published novels are a pile of crap, but I have to say that I LOVE this guy's book! Its satire carves a nice big piece out of LaLa Land's butt! And for anyone who ever felt a narcissistic pang of regret for the fame he never achieved (but clearly deserved!)---well, let's just say that this book takes the mickey out of that little ego-trip. The characters in this novel are often over-the-top but reminded me powerfully of people I know. I can't believe that those nimrods down in Hollywood haven't jumped all over this baby! -- Bob Chamberlain, Editor-In-Chief, The Hamilton Gazette
