The book contains the life stories of the author's great-grandfather and grandfather. The earlier memoir is mainly set around Kettering and Raunds in Northamptonshire and refers to events dating back to the last part of the 18th century. The later memoir is transcribed from a tape-recorded interview and refers, for the most part, to life around Manchester at the end of the 19th century. Both stories provide interesting insights into the life of non-conformist (principally Baptist) families
