The I, Jesus Scrolls – a Review By Father Peter - who was David’s Parish Priest for many years; he is now retired but continues to be a great influence. If I'm really honest I have to admit that I was really not at all looking forward to reading this book, as I knew I had to. I've never really enjoyed the various television presentations of the life of Jesus, however much I welcome anything the media might do to keep the Christian Faith in the public eye. I have always found that images of Jesus Christ offered by an actor have simply offended my own inner perceptions of the Jesus I meet in prayer, worship or Bible study. So anyone presuming to offer a fictional autobiography of Jesus simply never stood a chance. Having the bare faced cheek to pen the words and deepest thoughts of Jesus would simply be the end! I'm very surprised, and pleased, to have found The I, Jesus Scrolls not just entirely acceptable but really extremely well done. The fact that the book, unlike any visual... More > medium, left me entirely free to retain my own imaginings, just as a radio play often far exceeds what television and film can offer, gave it a very good start. But I also found myself, again surprisingly, able to go with David’s line on Jesus’ developing sense of calling; finding it nothing but very interesting and thought provoking. The way in which David interleaved the fruits of diligent and extensive research into both the Old and New Testaments and the local culture and history with his on-going narrative was simply very skilful indeed. The sense of authenticity was powerful and the ready use of stories and parables from the Gospels was well handled and often novel, but not unacceptably so. One particular feature which is likely to commend itself to the reader is the imaginative, and of course mostly imagined enlargement of the characters and personalities of the disciples. They became real people to an extent to which they really don't in the Gospels themselves. The writer also introduces fictional characters helpfully and skilfully. So I found the whole experience of reading this imaginative and well written book one which could sit happily alongside my experience of the Biblical Gospels without offence and with real interest. Sometimes it’s good to have one's pre-conceptions challenged!< Less
