Dawn Griffis's latest book is a real eye-opener in so many ways. Particularly her exposure of the nursing comparisons between the USA and the UK, which are shocking, to say the least. Also the extremely parochial attitudes between the different states. Cap this with the marvellous and frightening descriptions of the metreological variations, it is all-in-all an imperative read for everyone. It really is a must if you have read her previous wonderful history of 'Nursing at the Horton - The Way it Was'. R. M. Wood.

This was submitted to the UK page By alison.bushrod " I was unaware of the Health Care System in the USA. It appears that for those who are financially well off and have health insurance they are well served by the system. However those who are financially poor are badly penalized when they suffer ill health. It must be extremely difficult for dedicated Nurses (like Dawn) to provide Holistic Nursing Care when they have to constantly consider costs before starting to plan any Nursing Care. The same high standard of Nursing Care aught to be available to all USA citizens irrespective of costs to themselves. Alison Bushrod. Ex Nursing Colleague. Cornwall. UK.

I really enjoyed all three of Dawns books, but this is the best yet. Interesting subject and written in a friendly, chatty way.A very serious subject, handled with humour and compassion. I recommend this book.

Rarely can the expression 'warts 'n' all' have been more apposite. Being English I appreciate the NHS even more, after reading the catalogue of disasters Dawn came across. This is a fascinating insight into the Healthcare system and, as importantly, the culture of the USA. Racial and religious bigotry, incompetance, hunger for power and downright bullying are all covered in this book. Few punches are pulled, and few institutions come out unscathed. Your jaw may drop when you read this. You may grimace or cry in places. It may even shock you. However, it has its lighter moments as well.
