This story is set in Missouri in 1867 when Daniel Washington returns to the family homestead after serving in the civil war. He finds that his brother, Clayton, has been locked up and is facing the Hangman's noose for the rape and murder of Violet, Sheriff Thomas Lyle Buchanan's daughter. Once Daniel frees his brother from the noose they become fugitives, being chased across the plains by Sheriff Buchanan's posse. But the two brothers and Clayton's son, Andrew have an ally in the form of Francis Delaware. He is a Pinkerton Detective from New York and he is out to prove that Clayton is innocent.
