    The cover blurb does not lie, this book is a superb blend of cultural facts and description and a humorous look at the author’s relationship with ‘Himself’. As they travel through Italy the relationship unravels quite spectacularly and Miss Cater’s emotions are not hidden in her re-telling. On their way to mass at St. Peter’s in Rome Himself managed to rile Miss Cater enough to warrant the following thoughts: “I threw daggers from my narrowed eyes into his back. Lots of them, thud, thud, thud. ‘If you carry on like this matey,’ I muttered sotto voce, ‘it’s going to be your requiem mass’.” Memories of my visit to Pompeii were brought back by Miss Cater’s description of the city particularly the brothel and the large stones that cross the street. Similarly the description of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice made me feel as if I was there , walking across the bridge with Miss Cater.
