Del Deanus was just 34 years-old when he was diagnosed with the devastating terminal illness Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Despite being told he has only between two to five years to live he is determined to keep enjoying life. He has worked together with his childhood friend and journalist, Jerry Lyons, to share his story. As an outstanding youth footballer Del played for England schoolboys alongside Ryan Giggs and Nicky Barmby. He also spent four years playing for Tottenham Hotspur. Del speaks about his life, his football career, his loves, highs and lows and how he bravely copes with a disease that is slowly destroying his body. He also investigates the possibility of a link between playing football and developing MND. Memories Never Die is moving, funny, powerful and inspirational. Far from being a book about a young man dying it is a story of someone whose courage and fighting spirit will encourage others to make the most of life. All profits from this book will go to an... Dec 14, 2009Memories Never Die: I am not a book reader normally but I really enjoyed this book. Honestly and modestly written by Del and close pal Jerry. Humorous tales of the highs and lows of his football career including playing for England schoolboys alongside Ryan Giggs, playing for Spurs and in USA then coaching and managing non-league clubs. Then his life outside football including his jobs, plus his gambling and money problems. How he met Emma the love of his life, even then it was not all plain sailing. Then there was his horrendous experience of being diagnosed with MND and yet another shock. Del delves briefly into potential causes of MND and links to possible links with sport. With the love and support of wife Emma and his other close friends Del is trying his best to be positive, whilst facing an uncertain future, despite a new baby on the way. Each story is punctuated by his deteriorating body reminding him of his fears for the future. An excellent book!!! All the best Del!!!
Dec 13, 2009Unfortunately I have not as yet been able to read this moving story. I bought it in memory of my father-in-law who died in 2005 and had MND for many years. I paid Lulu 12.98 on 24th November and was told on the 27th November that it had shipped. When I e-mailed them on 7th December to tell them I had not received it they fobbed me off by telling me I had chosen the wrong shipping option and thus they could not track my package. They apologised for the inconvenience !!! Oh well at least MND will have received £4 into their funds.
Dec 5, 2009I have just finished reading Memories Never Die. I have been on a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish, tears came first then laughter and of course (as a Mother myself) Del's letter to his unborn child had me in pieces. The book is an honest, open and very brave account of Del's life. I think it will give strength to anyone dealing with a terminal illness. Hopefully this book will really raise awareness and money for the clearly underfunded research into MND.
Dec 5, 2009Quality book about a top guy which incorporates his acceptence and realisation of how his life is changing as each day goes by and how he is determined to make the most of all these days. Talks also about some happy events amongst the dreadful news. Would recommend this book to anybody. Added to that all the proceeds go to a great cause.
Dec 3, 2009I read this book in one evening as I was unable to put it down. Memories Never Die has everything, humour, emotion, honesty and a great although very sad story of a young mans battle to live with MND. Del is an example to us all his determination in the face of adversity is astounding. I defy anyone not to get a lump in their throat and a tear in their eye when reading the letter Del has written to his unborn child. Whether you know Del or not or whether MND has affected your life or not this is a must read book. So do yourself a favour and get a copy you will not be disapointed.
