Working as an Education Advisor in a remote Rwandan district for a year gave Denis an insight into a complex society seldom experienced by casual visitors. The book is an anecdotal, humorous and informative account of the events of that period as he explores multiple facets of Rwandan daily life. Each chapter begins with a beautiful full-length photograph and the text is dotted with snapshots referencing the descriptive content. A Year in Rwanda will be invaluable both for people planning to live in the country, as well as visitors and armchair travellers looking for more than a superficial understanding of Rwandan society.

Aug 27, 2012great. I loved this book. it is very well written and also honest, respectful and funny - hard to achieve when writing about a country as challenging as rwanda with its troubled history. I know the place from having visited on a couple of occasions. really refreshing to read something written from the heart. pics are excellent too.
Aug 9, 2012This is a fantastic, insightful book which I ordered after stumbling across it on the net while searching info on Rwanda for travel and (maybe) future work possibilities as a volunteer. It really gave me a taste of the country and its people. The pictures are great and of very high quality and the writing is of a very high standard and is, frequently, very funny. This was unexpected as I thought there would be a lot of heavyweight stuff on the genocide etc. There are a couple of very thoughtful and moving pieces on the issue and a lovely one on the gorillas but it is the small day to day stuff that really makes the book - explorations of the local language, the religious dimension, weddings and, one of my favourites, the culture of walking in a society where very few people have independent means of transport. The nature stuff is great too. I could go on but you would be best to discover it for yourself. Well done. Who says books are dead?
Jul 16, 2012If you want to have a greater understanding of Rwanda rather than just passing through as another traveller, this insightful, entertaining, incisive series of essays should be compulsory reading for anyone who plans to visit this vivid country. The author has a personable, lively sense of humour and yet the more serious social and political aspects of Rwandan culture are portrayed with a sensitive intelligence which make for a very comprehensive and compelling read. The wonders of the landscapes and wildlife are also beautifully observed and are enhanced by the many colourful photographs throughout the book. Even for those not thinking of travelling to Rwanda, the book is simply a very good read.
Jun 19, 2012This is a professionally produced and well written account of life in a remote and often strange, foreign community. Denis has gone to great lengths to not just understand the people as an outsider, but to try and become one of them and to see the world the way they see it. Inevitably (and naturally), however, he can't help but compare everything he sees with "life back home", but it is these observations that lead to the real insight. It's often hilarious, sometimes uplifting and always honest. This one's a real gem.
