In Betweens

ByDenise Coberley

Samuel has moved his cobbled together family to a small town in western Kansas. They've had their share of demons to fight. Sam has been there for all of them. The small town isn’t friendly. The family is “mixed” and unconventional. Sam and two others are black. The other family members - Landry, Darrin, and Chauncy - are not. The town only sees their color and that no one is married, or related. In a small town that equals wrong. Soon a local war hero is brutally murdered and his eight-year-old daughter goes missing. The town and its sheriff, John Phelps, immediately suspect "those people”. Sam is the main focus of the investigation, but the only evidence is circumstantial. As tensions build between Sam, his family, and the town, an old hurt between the town Sheriff and his son resurfaces. Mark Phelps does not believe that Sam is a murderer. Or that Landry - with whom he has begun a quiet, slightly awkward courtship – would live with one.
