"A Walk in Shilong by Dennis Witmer" Although known for his large format black and white photography, Witmer also has experimented with the intimacy of the small digital camera. Working with its ease of use and prolific output Dennis has tried to portray the feel and awe of an afternoons stroll. In "A Walk in Shilong" he shows us his obvious interest and consternation at the mix and clash of eastern and western culture. He shows this in his studies of street side posters, and advertisments that combine familiar images (to westerners) of fashion and products with the (for non Chinese speakers) impenitrible written language. Although the images in this book are what one would find while casually strolling down the streets of Hong Kong or most any major city in Chinia proper, the work is anything but casual. The compositions, though complex are both inviting and compelling. The combined effect of the series has an intimate quality and a sense of wonder that seem to... More > speak to Witmer's sensibilities. As for the design of the book, it is simple and understated letting the images speak clearly and loudly without distraction. The printing of the work is excellent and the colors in the photos practically jump off the page. This book is a satisfying visual journey and journal of Witmer's travels.< Less
