Jack Redhand, the notorious (if misunderstood) criminal is hunted day and night for the supernatural powers he was born with, like the rest of his kind. In a world wildly different from our own, yet strangely similar, those like Jack (known as Geniuses) try to make ends meet and avoid persecution through hiding, while Jack dreams of escaping the mountainous city he lives in and seeing the world below, which no human has seen in over a thousand years.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys sci-fi and fantasy; imaginative, thrilling and immensely enjoyable. Redhand is the author’s first novel; a rich concoction of fantasy, alternative technology and science fiction. While this is - for the most part – the protagonist Jack’s story, the book marshals a larger cast of characters whose stories are all neatly interwoven with that of his own. The world of Redhand is evoked with striking colour and clarity, which the author achieves without superfluous description, keeping the characters and their personal dramas to the fore, and switching neatly between perspectives to maintain a sense of tension. He creates visceral and vivid action scenes, but describes with equal precision the small, daily details of life in the labyrinthine city of Overhere, and the complex internal narratives of the central characters. The language, while at times unashamedly florid, is never contrived or circumlocutory. The author does not underestimate his... Rather, Overhere and the experiences of the characters are made for the most part clear and relatable. The preference for simple and familiar as opposed to flamboyant, fantastical names and words is a strength; making the story consistently accessible, and somehow lending greater poignancy and clarity to the world. This is an accomplished and addictive story told with real humanity, warmth and infectious sympathy and respect for the various characters. Even beyond the themes of power, control and technological and magical innovation, Redhand deals quite deftly with ideas of moral ambiguity. None of the main characters are one-dimensional, and it is not always entirely clear quite where sympathies should lie. While one cannot help but root for Jack, it is perfectly clear that he is far from a stereotypical hero protagonist. It is through the quietly tragic Alexander and the ever-driven yet compulsively conflicted Armen that the more subtle aspects of storytelling are revealed. All are united by a common tragedy, which has irrevocably shaped and defined their lives. Redhand is first and foremost dramatic and unashamedly action-packed, breathtaking and riveting to the end; a tale of power, manipulation and domination, which sorely deserves to be expanded upon< Less
