Management principles for safe use of poor quality water for crop production The food security coupled with the water security of the many developing nations is a cause of serious concern. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has projected the water scarcity for the World in year 2025. The increasing demand of water requires more intensive management of water resources including fresh and saline water in the inland areas and the desalination of sea water in the coastal areas.Salt-affected soils occur in all continents and under almost all climatic conditions. Their distribution, however, is relatively more extensive in the arid and semi-arid regions compared to the humid regions. To overcome the above-described problems, new techniques need to be developed and implemented to reduce excessive water uses and to conserve limited water supplies and better ways must be found New or existing technology must be tailored to meet local conditions
