This book gives a view on the development, production, diffusion and function of the rhyton in Thrace, on the cultural, diplomatic contacts and the artistic exchange between Achaemenid, Greek and local Thracian ideas and how they co-existed and hybridized. This regional study challenges the traditional core-periphery status relationship between Greek and non-Greek cultures and assesses the Thracian metalwork, not only in terms of form, style and decorative motifs, but also, iconography. A unique highlight of this research is the world’s most spectacular gold rhyton, the Panagyurishte amphora-rhyton, which has been an iconographical puzzle for scholars since its discovery in 1949 and is now decoded.
