Call and Response is a style of singing in which a melody sung by one singer is echoed by another., often in direct commentary. The purpose of this project is to catalyze this kind of an exchange between contemporary artists and writers. Each artist responds to a written work and each writer responds to a work of art. This book was published on the occasion of the fine art exhibition "Call and Response" at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. "Call and Response" was curated by Diana Simard. Over a dozen artists and writers working in poetry, fiction, painting, drawing, sculpture, film and installation participated. Included in this project are works from Josiah Cuneo, Marcus DeMaio, Noah Eli Gordon, Stephen Lindow, Amanda Nadelberg, Rachel Ouillette, Lauren Pakradooni, Alex Phillips, Daniel Presnell, Jason Daniel Schwartz, Victor Signore, Harry Swartz–Turfle, Sara Veglahn, Joshua Vrysen, Joshua Marie Wilkinson, and Angela Zammarelli.
