"Dirt - Poems by Dick Case" I am refugee from the East, finishing my 23rd winter in the Inland Northwest where I first ran into Dick Case’s quietly riotous presentation of the Idaho Panhandle in verse. His unexpected, bar-stooled and besotted poetic characters – besotted with all sorts of love and other mind altering experiences - offer Idaho-delightful vignettes with startling heart language and have helped this immigrant better understand the promise of human survival. And he does it with a wicked sense of humor and a keen eye for human nature and this exotic place – and, of course, baseball…… His poetry is tough but elegant and mightily playful stuff for me……. "Modern American Poetry" What I like most about Dick Case’s poetry is the incredible variety. He changes settings and themes in virtually every poem but the real richness comes from the array of characters he has observed and remembered from his seven plus decades in science, social work, and the arts. If someone would create a "bar" bar code as the basis for a concordance to Dick’s verse, we would find bartenders, bar flies, bar maids, bar none, and maybe even bar mitzvah with all of them connected in some manner or other; his poems are all inclusive like those of Walt Whitman who would have liked a lot of Dick’s imagery. But, caveat emptor: there is nothing Case likes better than a good joke and he plays them regularly on his readers. His harmless but satirical portrayals of the cast of characters of his own autobiography remind me of Edwin Arlington Robinson’s TILBURY TOWN. No one ever gets hurt very badly but hardly anyone escapes totally unscathed. Timothy... More > Hunt, Ph. D. Retired professor of American Literature Hayden, Idaho< Less
