Mar 25, 2009"Re: The Great Life Farce by Dirk Campbell and Marcus Bolt" Thanks for the review, Sahlan. In answer to your questions, and for the record, I tend to conceptualise many of the ideas either working with Dirk, or solus (Dirk does the same) - and we run them by one another, weeding out the no-nos, modifying some, improving others, and we work up the best. Dirk does all the drawings, and I agree, they are of National newspaper standard, and fleshes out most, not all, of the articles. For example, I saw an 'exasperated male' list of pleas to women and thought it might make the basis for a spoof Bapak talk. I roughed it out and sent it to Dirk, who came back with the remarkable pastiche you see in the book. Every word in the book, virtually, every idea, even the positioning of items, is squabbled over, argued for or against, until eventual agreement is reached, thanks, I think, to a healthy mutual respect of each other's strengths and awareness of our individual weaknesses. Dirk... More > would either disagree, or put it another way entirely, because he's an arrogant old cynic (haha - just joking, Dirk). Although our very different make-ups are a volatile mix, we do have something in common. We both joined Subud to get away from religion and religious posturing, dogma, belief systems, ideologies and the 'democrat's pornography' (Ian MacEwan) of gullibility and herd instinct. The result is, we tend to want to lampoon this stuff whenever we come across it. Marcus< Less
Jan 17, 2009"The Great Life Farce by Dirk Campbell and Marcus Bolt" Should you buy this book if you want a great laugh? - Most definitely. Should you buy this book if you are not a member of "Subud"? - Definitely not, as it is a book mainly of "in-jokes" (more of that later), which only a Subud member would appreciate. These guys are great cartoonists. The few cartoons whose subject matter is not Subud would not be out of place in a national newspaper. My only complaint is I am not sure which are Dirk's and which Marcus. I am guessing they are mainly Dirk's. The cartoons will make you laugh a lot, but in this, their fourth book, it is the written material that particularly excels. The ceremonial words for a fictious "Closing" ceremony, with the words and concepts for a Subud opening turned into their exact opposites, had me crying with laughter. And there is a similar priceless pretend talk on "Adam and Eve" in the style of Bapak as translated... More > by Sjarif - particularly funny because of its insightfulness. It's gratifying also to see the current official obsession with Subud trademarking mercilessly lampooned at every opportunity in both the cartoons and the writings, by trademarks being attached all over the place. To end on a more serious note. Years ago, about the time of Dirk and Marcus's second book, I compiled a small collection of humorous true Subud stories. 30 were sent and all were good, but two I had to reject- they were about the ineptness of certain Subud enterprise attempts and were so embarrassingly pathetic that they just weren't funny. Similarly, there are things satirised in this book that should not be there to satirise - Subud members' fault, not the book's fault. For example the weirdness and non-normality of so much Subud culture. Also the "Spot the Difference" cartoon, showing reports 25 years apart, identical apart from the addition of trademarks. Very close to the appalling truth. Subud members wake up and take note!< Less
