Be forewarned: The first thing you'll notice about Simeon Stylites is that it's written in a syntax unto itself. D.N. Nation is sometimes evocative of Joyce and Faulkner, and sometimes just reminiscent of a guy who's been up for four days straight muttering to himself as he walks down the street. But the book never lacks for thought or for entertainment. The historical Simeon Stylites was an ascetic monk who spent most of his life atop a pillar in an attempt to remove himself from the world, like a 5th-century Dr. Manhattan. Nation's Simeon - more accurately, his series of Simeons - is essentially a creature of the 21st century, and occasionally of the future. Simeon's journey is somewhat bound to a particular time and place - the Atlanta-to-Athens corridor of Georgia, circa mid-2000s - yet also not. In the end, Simeon Stylites is about any number of things: friendship, love, political discourse, and beer all get star turns. But it's primarily about the ways in which we interact with... More > each other, and an exploration of the sorts of internal challenges we face when we perform interactions that seem basic on the surface, the sort of things that led the 5th-century Simeon to seek asylum atop the pillar. I'm not going to promise to you that this will be an easy read. It's not. Stream of consciousness is a hard style to master, and this is Nation's debut effort. There's a mix of well-composed pages and impossibly clunky sections, but the book overall shows a promising writer with a unique voice, and is worth the effort Nation challenges his reader to put forth.< Less
