How could such a small portion of a man’s life affect him so much? What can happen to a man in only two years that could so profoundly reshape the entire rest of his life? Why can’t a soldier just forget it and let it go? I did hold it in and kept it mostly out of mind for decades. I’ve asked myself those questions, and my friends have asked that of me too. I have no answer except to understand that for those few months, every moment was so intense and so emotionally filled that it somehow burns into a man so deep that it becomes like a scar on the inside, but not visible on the outside.

Apr 30, 2008"Finally Understanding" My father recommended this book to me. I'm a 28 year old gal that doesn't usually read this type of book, but as I began, I felt myself drawn in. Growing up in Missouri on a farm, I could better understand the hard labor we are brought up with. I never understood war. You wrote it how it was. My cousins are currently enlisted men. They don't talk about their deployments-neither does my uncle- and I understand why. This book not only helped me understand an era that came before me, but the men that fought in another world for our country. I laughed, I cried and I can't have anything for admiration for any soldier. Don, my father, uncle and cousins speak very highly of you. I wish I knew you personally as you are truly to be admired. You have not only enriched your life but the lives of others and truly appreciate the things that many people these days overlook. Your book is inspiring, provoking, heartbreaking and joyous. Forget reading Shakespeare,... More > your book should be required reading instead. Thank you for teaching me. Sep 26, 2007"See The Dragon" I have known this man for most of my life but never knew until I read this book of the sacrifices that he made for our country, I true american hero and a story that no movie could do justice, most important he brings back the memories of his fellow soliders and freinds who did not get to come home so that there sacrifice will never be forgotten !! Sep 24, 2007"See The Dragon" I loved the personal stories of each soldier. Don writes in a fashion which makes you feel as tho you can reach out and touch or talk with each of them.
Sep 13, 2007"Combat Infantryman" Incredible book. I couldn't put the thing down once I started reading it. The author was able to put into words all aspects of being a combat infantryman; from going to the army and the changes there, to actually being in combat, to coming home and living with the experiences and choices that any combat soldier has done. Although I was an infantry soldier in combat at another place and time it STILL captured and put into words how I felt and changes that I went through in a way I never would have been able to. While reading I could feel the misery of the monsoon rains, or feel the oppresive heat, or hear the roar of steady weapons fire, or feel the sorrow of losing a fellow soldier to combat. If you have ever wondered what it is like to be a combat soldier I would highly recommend this book to paint an acurate picture of what it is like to be there. I would especially recommend this book to those of you who have been there as a blue cord infantryman,...
