John Corbally immigrated to America in 1747 as the Baptist religion opposed the King’s Anglicanism. He became a lay minister, but persecution drove him to the Pennsylvania frontier. Ordained, he ministered until his death founding many Baptist churches and was known as “The ablest Baptist minister of his time in the Pennsylvania frontier.” This is not a retelling of previously printed material; it represents over forty years of meticulous research. Previously unknown information describes the bogus painting of him, his birthplace, his true first wife, exact locations where he lived in Virginia and Pennsylvania, his long-lost treatise on The Believer’s Defense of Baptism, his involvement in the Ketoctin and Redstone Baptist Associations, his involvement in the Whiskey Insurrection from the government’s point of view, the Corbly Massacre as described in his and his daughter’s letters, and many other previously unknown facts. This book is purchased at... Apr 11, 2015Anyone who is a descendent of John Corbly should read Don Corbly's books. I have read three of them and each one has provided me with a deeper understanding of John Corbly and the times of his life. I am extremely grateful for the detail of of Don Corbly's research. I have shared this book with my cousins. It has been to California, Washington and is now in Texas. The next generation is beginning to express an interest in our family history because of Don Corbly's research.
Apr 10, 2015EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW...WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START! I can easily believe that Don Corbly spent most of his adult life doing the research for this book about his ancestor and mine, John Corbly. I once traveleled from California and spent two weeks on the Corbly Trail, from Winchester, VA to Troy, OH. I had the thrill of finding John Jr.'s almost forgotton grave outside of Cincinnati--almost lost to time. And the graves of Delilah, the girl who survived scalping, and her older sister, Priscilla. The headstones were worn away but still readable...at least for now. It was a thrill. I went into the Pennsylvania Archives in Harrisburg and half-a-dozen local history collections, but I could have saved myself a lot of time, trouble, and money had I known that this wonderful book was about to reveal the very things I was trying to find in all of those places. The important thing I discovered was: I could see that it would take a lifetime to do John Corbly justice. Now everyone... More > can find out so much about this amazing American patriot and man of God. I would like to say thank you to Don Corbly for all of his hard work, dedication, and imagination. Mar 27, 2015Forwarded by Barb King on May 24, 2010 Format: Paperback Verified Purchase History is painted with a broad brush, but it lives in the minute details of human lives. This wonderfully researched book offers a detailed look into how one man, his family, his neighbors and community navigated the treacherous & tough times as our country was forming. The events that run through John's life are amazing. His response to those events is perhaps even more so. Thanks to Don Corbly for illuminating the great great great great grandfather I've heard about distantly, but never knew much about. You gave me a chance to reach across the generations and meet him in person. John Corbly - Cassandra Corbly - Matilda Gregg -- Charles West - Donald Corbly West - Harrison West -- ME!
Nov 7, 2013The most amazing thing about this Baptist preacher was not the terrible things that happened to him, but what he did in spite of these terrible acts. He knew that God had spared him from the Indian attack for a reason. He went on to help plant 30 churches and pastored the Goshen Baptist Church from it's beginning unil his death in 1803. The church's name was then changed to the John Corbly Memorial Baptist Church where it can be found today in Green County, PA. He lived to see the Second Great Awakening in America, and is an example that God's grace is sufficient no matter what the circumstances may be. If you're going thru a troubling time, or think that nothing good can come of your situation, this book will give you the encouragement that you need to see that God can accomplish good in spite of our present circumstances.
