Carol's Alzheimers Journey
Paperback, 563 Pages

Alzheimer's disease groups across the country are trying to educate professional caregivers, who tend to focus on deficits, to instead accentuate the positive and focus on living a full life. This book is at the cutting edge here. People need to hear this. The story of Carol's courtship and marriage reminded me of my parent's story - they were part of the Greatest Generation too. This book really captures how life unfolded then.

Jun 24, 2013It is a remarkable experience to have the privilege to read a story about two people that became your parents. Up to the point of reading their book, I only knew them from my point of view and history with them as their first born son. Now I know them the way you will come to know them as you read their life story. Don and Carol are two remarkable people that the fates brought together during a simpler and far less material era in our country. Through the chapters of this book, each a "scene" further describing their enduring love for each other, you will get the chance to follow their remarkable and adventurous journey from that simpler time into the 21st century. Their story is filled with anecdotes involving all kinds of people from family characters to famous personalities, to fast friends and frustrating folks suffering from "bigshotittus". You will follow them on exciting travels, and experience their thrills of victory and challenges of life that were... More > well met always together. Remarkably, Carol's arrival later in life to alzeheimer's disease did not end their adventure and love story, rather it caused the two of them to create different approaches to continue to experience the things they loved to do together. For people who enjoy reading a great love story, this book is definately for you. For people looking for answers on how to adapt and cope with alzeheimer's disease, this is a book of both hope and revelation. For either reason, in reading this book, you will find as I now have that Don and Carol are people worth getting to know!< Less
Jun 21, 2013I'm a retired Registered Nurse who found the authors' Elder Care model for Alzheimer's fascinating. In the past, care of Alzheimer's and dementia patients focused on protecting them from harm by warehousing in a safe envionment and treating them medically. Under such circumstances, their lives held very little joy or pleasure as a dire condition robbed their history and memories. Carol's care took a very different course. Don Ford believed that hidden inside Carol were the happy child who enjoyed music and dance, and the joyful woman, wife, mother, daughter, friend who drew great pleasure from everyone and everything around her. Despite Alzheimer's, Carol's life continued to be happy and pleasurable because Don triggered joyful moments from her past so she could enjoy them in the present. Pictures in the book of Carol smiling joyfully in the later stages of Alzheimer's are powerful testaments to Don's Elder Care model effects. This book is touching, funny, hopeful, and helpful. For... More > readers who think of Alzheimer's as an inevitably joyless devastation, consider this: On the last day of Carol Ford's life, she laughed and danced with Don to Big Band music.< Less
