Seduced by Gorgonzola is a journey and a pilgrimage. Donna Tiernan Mahoney takes a bold look at the heart of a family restaurant business that connects a family to God, good food, hospitality and love. The book cooks, creates and chills the Manero family story. Essential ingredients include a whole lot of relationships connected by gastronomy, loyalty, trust, humor, sorrow, joy, faith, and… gorgonzola cheese. We discover that the famous gorgonzola cheese may or may not have such an illustrious history as Donna’s historical and sometimes hysterical family story. The key spices are garlic, faith and Italian immigrants around the year 1900. Donna was raised upstairs above a restaurant. It is a unique perspective that evokes a profound soul searching. Restaurant life is not easy, but it works for this family for over 100 years. She says it is in their blood. Because of the famous celebrities that frequent their fine restaurants, customers (and sometimes employees) make the mistake of... More > believing a well known family like the Manero’s is rich and won’t miss the stolen salt shakers, food or knives. Donna diffuses this myth and gently reveals that her family’s wealth is in hospitality, service, dedication, forgiveness and love. Realistically, the customer is not always right, but Donna and her family treat the customer as though they are always right. Donna’s reluctant but embraced story is a compass for those families in the restaurant lifestyle and business. The food, anniversaries, celebrations, and dining out experiences that her family has dished out for over 100 years from New England to Florida to Maggie Valley and to many places in between are all food for the body, mind and soul. I didn't want the book to end. If you have ever been to any of the Manero's Restaurants you will delight in Donna's stories. Growing up in Hallandale, Florida and going to Manero's became a part of my own family's traditions and stories. So hearing about the family, employees and patrons that became Manero's history is a fun and entertaining read. Parts of the book became a walk down memory lane - the two lane Hallandale Beach Blvd. and bridge, thousands of land crabs, Manero's billboard, whiskey sours, wooden salad bowls & Gorgonzola. Donna, thanks for sharing "Seduced by Gorgonzola" you have a talent for story telling. I highly recommend it.

I just finished this wonderful book and truly loved it. This story of a family owned restaurant business opened my eyes to the generations of hard work that made Manero's restaurants the success they are. The ups and downs, relationships and experiences the author and family have gone through makes you laugh out loud at times. This book is truly an "eye opener" for the restaurant guest . I highly recommend "Seduced by Gorgonzola" as a good read.
