Sep 30, 2018I just finished Doug Higley's remarkable "Scary Dark Rides" and I can definitively say that it will get numerous re-readings. The book is a love letter to the Dark Ride, to Coney Island, to the smell of popcorn and sea breezes, and to being young. Most of all it's a love letter to getting your pants scared off through the carefully cultivated jump scares, spooks, and haunts found in the Scary Dark Ride. It reads with the authenticity of someone who truly lived and loved their subject matter. Mr. Higley turned his passion into a lifetime vocation, making weird and wondrous creations for the world to gaze at in quiet amazement or deep, shuddering terror. He's the perfect guide for this trip through the creepy side of the Midway.
Nov 24, 2009This book is great and has been since it first came out as a printed out copy on fine paper from the authors kitchen binded together with a gold ribbon. That's the copy I have, given to me by doug himself many moons ago, when I was just a youngin' "To the future king of the dark rides, Louie! -- Dough Higley" is what it says. This book is a fun read and really puts you in world of loud banging doors, alarm buzzes, and jumping skeletons. No one writes it like Doug. Told in the way that your unlce that tells really cool stories on Christmas and Halloween would tell. Good stuff, I love that I found this on Lulu. To the persnoally written in numbered pages, with a diffrent spook or monster to interact with the page number, to amazing photos of the spook houses from a lost time. Though the subject seems to be an obsucre one, if you were ever a child at the carnival, starring at the haunted house, watching the cars bang there way in and back out of those flimsy spook doors, and... More > tried to get just a glance at what might be inside when those doors swung open for just a second and all you could see was pure darkness... this book will turn on the lights and finally show you the true horrors that had lay behind those flimsy doors.< Less
