Doug writes a practical guide to growing managers and leaders that can be used by executives to grow and train their teams' future leaders. I've been through the process and reference the tools many times in explaining concepts to others. It is a great read for anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of management, become a dynamic manger or to determine if management is the correct career path..

In The dynamics of management, executive coach and management consultant Doug Jordan writes about leading and engaging others from the perspective of the individual manager or supervisor. Business processes are described not statically, but "dynamically", in the interactions of individual managers who may have different levels of expertise and comfort in their management role. By looking at management "from the inside out" - considering personality and career planning for example - the book helps readers to familiarize themselves with effective ways to "think about" management, before engaging in behaviours that impact others such as setting expectations and providing recognition. The reflective manager who is interested in personal and professional development in a management career will find useful tips and tools to work on skills such as goal setting, influencing, and maintaining positive human relations - basic abilities that we can all become a... More > little better at when we think about it! Doug Jordan writes in a conversational style and bases his recommendations on a number of accepted theories and models including Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Herzberg's two-factor model of motivation, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment, and InQ styles of thinking. These are helpful reminders for people who might have encountered them in management courses, however their overlapping application could become overwhelming for people who have not seen them before. The diagrams, tables, and bibliography can be helpful here. The author shares original material developed from years of practical experience, in the form of the Crisp/AFS profile, which can be used to provide 360 degree performance feedback. Reading this book, one understands better that success in management is really in the eyes of of those who see us in action and are affected by our behaviours. While it is helpful to think and plan, it is even more critical to communicate well, tuning in to the feedback of others, and translating this into an action plan for continuous learning and development. This book is a very helpful guide on this journey.< Less

Doug captures both the technical elements of management while equally treating the human side of the equation. Great read, but event better as a continuous reference point.
