""Three Generations Of The Same Woman" Review" "Three Generations Of The Same Woman" By Doug Mattis 92 pages Doug Mattis - Publisher Review by: Len Rogers StoneWall Society Doug Mattis shares a revealing while entertaining and touching, peek into his personal life. At the same time providing a glimpse of what is an online phenomenon, the blog. An easy read which will amuse to the point of out loud laughter. Doug weaves common points of emotional connection with most readers. (A sort of, the common sense of it, approach.) Mattis hits the highs and lows of several life experiences. Happily, most are of an enlightening and more entertaining value. However, the author does offer a personal side which brings some bite to the complete product. Oh and that "bite" is most enjoyed by the reader. Believe me, Mattis has the demonstrated literary skills to walk you up and down all paths dark and light. As the cover states, "Three Generations Of... More > The Same Woman" is a collection of essays, short stories, and blog posts. I am still new to the blog scene. However, it is clear a new literary genre has been born. A free style with amusing quips and colorful pointers makes Doug's meanderings delightfully entertaining. Simultaneously bringing some endearing insight to relationships, with which most will relate. For me this was a great introduction to the blog. Not to discount the Mattis essays and short stories, there are real gems here. "Seasons" is an interesting "Same Time Next Year" type take on a longstanding friendship. Better said, relationship as the two men share a life in pretty much all manners. True to the genre this is a short story. More importantly one which moves quickly but has the strength to imbed images and persons into your memory. "Skating Stalker" is yet another example of the same Mattis prowess at the genre of the short story. Compelling and believable this story will share some new vision on the ups and downs of sexuality. Then there is... "wait for it"....... "The Waiver". A brilliantly personal account of young awakening and the deeply rooted fears attached. Doug completely reconnects with his adolescent memories and shares a common and tormented tale. Not a preachy piece more shared memories, and there is the delight. Generously sprinkled through "Three Generations Of The Same Woman" are also the essays and comic interludes. These additions for me, brought forth the author's playful side while boldly making the reader aware that Mattis does indeed have a sense of humor and is quick on the uptake. One such comic inclusion, "Gay Translations" think Jeff Foxworthy gone totally gay. Not in a copy sense, but that the accuracy and humor is on target. These brief offerings actually are wrap-a-rounds which bring the entire collection together. Unique style, strengthened by universally shared themes and issues, make this Mattis work personally endearing. A poignant portion of this multi-talented man's life experience.< Less
