Nov 1, 2011Great book for political junkies. Gives some great ideas and well worth the money. Thumbs up!
Oct 27, 2009I half expected this book to be a somewhat 'preaching to the choir' lecture on the benefits of limited regulation, free markets and small government. But, Daniel Hannan and Douglas Carswell, in sharp and precise terms, cut straight to the heart of the problems in British politics and offer truly inspiring and original solutions to problems in every area of political life. They deal purely in logic and reason, not hopes and aspirations, and make a strong case for the need, and benefits of, greater localism and democratic accountability. I hope these politicians continue to fight for their cause, I hope to see more of them in the public eye (and not just on youtube!).
Oct 12, 2009"Re: The Plan: Twelve months to renew Britain" This is a stimulating read and highly commended. The style is no nonsense crystal clear and in most respects well researched Not all parts can be blindingly followed a) attacking PACE does not take into account the need for it. Even thinking coppers accept the need for a disciplined approach to police interviews - pre PACE they were bullies and forgot the fact that a detainee is innocent until proven guilty by a court - we must not go back to pre PACE days b) they forget why local authorities lost their powers - useless with money and corruption was rife. Do not ever forget the 1980's scandels - perhaps we need parish councils back! c) they misjudge the judiciary - sometimes they are all there is between us and the despots who would relieve us of our our liberty - take much more care with too fine a selection of judicial decisions which may have been faulty - after all if Parliament does not like a judge's decision it can... More > legislate on the point. That is exactly THE point Thus the book has its flaws but nonetheless a generally sound basis to proceed. Is it the Tory manifesto then? Deb< Less
Feb 16, 2009"The Plan: Twelve months to renew Britain" Douglas Carswell and Daniel Hannan take an unflinching look at what is wrong with British politics today, how we got here and best of all, how to fix it in a pragmatic, sensible way. No rocket science, no sophistry, no "eye-catching initiatives"; just good, solid, sensible, easily understood legislation. Read this book and I'm sure you'll find yourself pestering your friends to read it and realise that the solution to many of Britain's dysfunctions are not a million miles away and that a single year could be enough to turn things around. Can you imagine watching a year's worth of legislation being enacted and not disagreeing with any of it? Can you imagine that it is possible to reshape politics and make it meaningful to us all again? Not in some airy-fairy world of buzzwords and intellectual argument, but real "meat and potatoes" issues. Clearly written, cogently argued, devoid of party-political bitchiness,... More > this book offers a clear and simple method for fixing a lot of what is broken, very quickly. Buy this book. It is simply excellent.< Less
