"Yoke of Sorrow" This is a splendid book. Peacock manages to combine an attention to detail with an ability to write a gripping tale. The book covers the major inventions of the Industrial Revolution but is far from a dry catalogue of events and dates. The story is full of deception, theft and skullduggery. It is a hard book to put down. You will find out the truth about the big names, Arkwright, Hargreaves, Watt etc.. You will learn about Edward Somerset, John Kay. Thomas Highs etc.. And you will find out why policemen are called pigs. As a scientist and inventor myself I can relate to moments of ecstasy and periods of deception, theft and skullduggery. If only history had been written this well when I was a lad! Tony Heyes BSc(Physics), PhD(Physics), PhD(Psychology)
