“Veteran counselor Dan Montgomery has given us a breezy, fast-reading manual that takes the mystery out of the helping work of the action-oriented counselor. His wisdom opens windows with helpful metaphors--like a torn-up Kleenex and a purple rhinoceros.” --Rev. Gaylord Noyce, Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Theology, YALE DIVINITY SCHOOL “Dr. Montgomery has given his readers the opportunity to look over his experienced shoulders as he helps people untangle their lives. He skillfully uses a relational compass to help clients identify how their lives are constricted in unhealthy ways and how they can move toward more expansive forms of mental health. The author gives us examples and explanations of 25 useful therapeutic techniques that alone are worth the price of the book.” --James Beck, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist and Chair, Counseling Division, DENVER SEMINARY “Compass Therapy is easy to learn and apply. Examples of how to use compass theory abound in the book. The book is... More > especially helpful to those who are experienced in counseling, but all therapists and pastors who want to deepen their counseling skills will find it valuable.” --Kenneth Swetland, D.Min., Campus Chaplain & Professor of Ministry, GORDON-CONWELL THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY “This book makes a very important contribution to Christian counseling and how the Christian faith and psychology can work together to bring healing into person’s lives. The case studies are excellent. Montgomery uses a wide range of techniques including role-play and imaging, which are helpful and empowering to the client.” --Rev. Abigail R. Evans, Ph.D., Professor of Practical Theology, PRINCETON THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY “Compass Therapy offers both clinical and pastoral counselors a map, guide, and center for helping clients sorts out life and choose direction. Dan Montgomery has pulled together many years of study, writing and practice with an established model of personality and interpersonal behavior. He provides a workable set of tools for the care-giving and helping process.” --David W. Augsburger, Ph.D., Professor of Pastoral Counseling, FULLER THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY< Less

It doesn't matter if you read it as a counselor looking for new ideas or as a person seeking to make life changes, this book "really works" as the title says. If you're looking for something that will actually make a difference in the way you cope with life situations, difficult people, personal challenges or emotionally stresses, pick this book up today.

This is a masterpiece on psychotherapy in general, and Christian counseling in particular. The Self Compass growth tool and the LAWS of personality (Love and Assertion, Weakness and Strength) will immediately empower therapists, pastoral counselors, and chaplains. Lay persons who seek personality wholeness can apply these user-friendly concepts as well. The Compass Model is diagnostic and therapeutic at the same time. As soon as you recognize how a person is stuck on one or more compass points, you encourage the person to take action steps into unused compass points, thereby making practical progress toward a balanced Self Compass. Montgomery explains and demonstrates 25 therapeutic techniques that stimulate personality healing and relational fulfillment. He also shows how to integrate a person's whole human nature in the counseling process: mind and heart, spirit and body. This promotes therapeutic transformation with lasting results. I've read countless books in this field for over... More > twenty years. Dr. Dan Montgomery's Compass Therapy stands head and shoulders above the rest. Raymond D. Anderson, Ph.D., Th.D., LPCC< Less
